The company behind istockcreative.com (i3m) today announced an extension to its macro stock photo portfolio service, which will now include stock news photos. Traditionally the stock photo library has been for electronic and print reproduction and images have therefore needed to meet the copyright laws for brand names and trademarks as well as requiring release agreements for models and some buildings.
News footage is however primarily exempt from such restrictions as long as it is used for the purpose of topical news. For example a stock image of a Boeing 747 may not be reproduced without the consent of the carriers or must have its logo's and branding removed. An image used in a news story about British Airways, for example, may show the companies branding or imagery.
Continuing its one membership for all any contributing member may be allowed to upload news stock images and they may be downloaded in accordance with the new license agreement created specifically for these types of images.
It should be noted that photographing 'news' does not give anyone the green light to photograph anything they like. The images available through istockcreative.com are stock news images and must therefore relate to purpose. Every country has its privacy and conduct laws and any members contributing to the news section need to be aware of what, whom and where they can photograph. IF IN DOUBT DON'T!
